John Cleese is ideally cast as a headmaster obsessed with punctuality, order and discipline, and puffed up with self-importance as he sets off to Norwich to chair the annual Headmasters’ Conference. But he accidentally boards the wrong train, and in his determination to reach Norwich—on time—at all costs, he sees his world completely unravel. The film was popular in Britain but considerably less so in America; and it was Cleese’s exploration of why exactly this was, that led him to go on and create his transatlantic masterpiece, A Fish Called Wanda.
