How the heart was won

2004, framed mezzotint (triptych)

How the Heart was Won illustrates two birds nesting in their natural environment among tall grasses.

The right hand sheet of the triptych details a male of the species with a flower in its beak as if it was being presented to the female in the middle panel who stands before the nest of eggs in the right hand panel.

The print is produced in black ink with the heart shaped flower coloured red and is indicative of the artist’s exemplary skill with the mezzotint technique. The work alludes to the ceremonies’ inherent in our natural environment and highlights the artists’ connection with the fragile landscape of his indigenous ancestors
