A gem-like paradox by director Paul Schrader, it celebrates glamour and pleasure for its own sake, while making a distinctly Calvinist statement about human nature unassisted by grace. Cold in its thinking and aesthetically enchanting, American Gigolo helped define the style of the 80s. A true watershed in the cinema of that era.
