Proposals Sought for Site-Specific Works of Art CMAG on the Square 2020 to 2022

By Canberra Museum and Gallery

Canberra Museum and Gallery is calling for proposals from artists to create site-specific works for its glass-walled project space facing Civic Square, CMAG on the Square.

This exhibition program has seen a wide variety of outstanding works presented by local artists and is a vital part of CMAG’s programming and commitment to supporting and promoting the art practice of our region.

The space is an important one. Located adjacent to CMAG’s main entrance, it sits opposite the ACT Legislative Assembly and is accessible for viewing twenty-four hours a day. Civic Square is both a gathering place and transit area for patrons visiting the theatre and library and so works presented in this space are viewed by a diverse audience.

Fully realised proposals for installations of art are invited from artists based in Canberra and the surrounding region who are not currently engaged in formal study. The works could be temporal and ephemeral or involve physical elements that are installed for the duration of the exhibition.

Successful artists will receive a $500 artist fee and up to $500 to cover materials for the presentation of the work. This program is supported by John Hindmarsh AM. CMAG will also assist artists in the following ways;

  • Curatorial support,
  • Installation support – including potential use of CMAG equipment and local transportation,
  • CMAG prepares and paints walls and floor,
  • Writes and installs text panel and artist name signage on external glass walls,
  • Professional photographic documentation,
  • Promotion through CMAG print, web and social media.

Timing

Installations generally required to be undertaken by the artist or their designate and take place over three days. De-installations required over two days.

Installations would remain in place for approximately three months, during dates between late November 2020 and November 2022.

To submit an application please provide:

  • a one-page written description of the proposed project, preferably accompanied by visual renderings,
  • a statement on how your project responds to the location and characteristics of the CMAG on the Square space and audience,
  • images of previous related work,
  • an outline of the proposed materials and installation requirements,
  • a current CV,
  • proposed schedule for making of the work,
  • preferred date range for the presentation of the work.

Artists are encouraged to consider major annual events in Canberra and whether opportunities exist to thematically link their proposed project to an existing event. However, this is not a prerequisite to the application. Artists who have previously exhibited in the program are eligible to apply.

All proposals that meet the submitted application criteria will be considered.

Applications should be addressed for the attention of:
