This sensitive film is the third in Celine Sciamma's unofficial coming-of-age trilogy. It follows 16-year- old Marieme's negotiation of the oppressive race, gender and class pitfalls of her rough neighbourhood in the high-rise banlieue of outer suburban Paris. Sciamma controversially decided to tell her story in these marginalised communities and almost exclusively from the viewpoint of teenage women. To achieve this she assembled a cast of mostly non-professional black actors who dramatically depict the dead-end prospects for girls trapped in this restrictive environment. Karidja Toure, in her first film, plays Marieme as a girl struggling to break those bonds.
