Eagles at bay

1967, linocut, printed in black ink, from one block

Eagles at Bay is a black and white linocut, featuring a large eagle soaring in the sky, circling a boat and lighthouse below. The work suggests the freedom of the native bird above a seascape which is both unspoilt but also colonised by European culture.

This work is a fine example of Gilbert’s powerful prints from the 1960s, depicting the Australian landscape with bold black lines, and referencing both the contemporary situation of Indigenous people and their long artistic heritage.
